Anniversaries galore!

Canada 150; Vernon 125; Battle of Vimy 100, Vernon Air Cadets Red Lion Squadron 75 and the Okanagan Military Tattoo Big Number 4!!!  Lots of anniversaries and lots to celebrate.  As our program develops for the Tattoo 2017, we will pay homage to all of the above.  Now, drum roll please–The Okanagan Military Tattoo was nominated in the tourism category of the Vernon Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence awards.  It was announced at a C of C luncheon last week that we have made it to the final three and the winner will be announced March 10.

Youth to be featured

Norman D. Crerar, OMT Producer/Director (front right) recently caught up with Mike Jewett, Music Program Director (front left) and the Calgary Round-Up Band while in Calgary.

1967 was Canada’s 100 anniversary of confederation.  Here we are, fifty years later, and another milestone to celebrate.  Canada 100 had huge celebrations across our country and youth were very much at the forefront.  The celebrations for Canada 150 will be much the same and the Tattoo will do it’s part.  The 150 members of the Calgary Round-Up Band will be joined by approximately 200 cadets from the Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Camp, Irish Dancers, Highland Dancers, a youth fiddle group and more.  It will be fun to witness the mix and match of youth performing groups with our adult performing groups.  We expect to have a record number of performers this year, somewhere in the 600 range!!

Robbie Burns Birthday – Pipe Bands will be busy

January 25, 1759 was Robbie Burns birthday.  He died at the age of 37 July 21, 1796.  Robbie Burns was prolific with his writing and especially his poetry.  He has been names Scotland’s Poet.  Pipe Bands all over the world will be in big demand for Robbie Burns dinners this week-end, piping in the Haggis and playing Robbie Burns tunes and ending the evening with Auld Lang Syne.  This will be a good warm-up for the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2017 as some 100 Pipes and Drums will be performing in our event and we will be playing a Robbie Burns tune!!

Six months to go!!

Just six months until our Okanagan Military Tattoo 2017.  Planning for our event has been in the works since the 2016 Tattoo ended but the Tattoo Organizing Committee is now in full swing.  Performers and performing groups for 2017 have started to confirm their attendance and more have promised to confirm in the next short while.  We will start to list the 2017 performers on our Tattoo web site; within the next few weeks.  Stay tuned, lots to come!!!

Tattoo 2017 and Youth

Canada’s centennial celebration in 1967 had a huge emphasis on youth.  The same attitude is being promoted for our  susquecentennial (150 years) this year, 2017.  We have had confirmation that the Calgary Round-up Band will be performing in our Okanagan Military Tattoo 2017 July 29 and 30.  This 100 + member performing group of junior high students is rated as Canada’s premier marching and performing arts ensemble.  We are certain the Calgary Round-Up Band will fill Kal Tire Place and be an inspiration to all of us!! Find them on Facebook and follow their exploits as they get ready for the Calgary Stampede then the Okanagan Military Tattoo.

2017 and lots to celebrate!

2017, Canada’s 150th Birthday.  Lots to celebrate!  This is also WW l Vimy Ridge 100 anniversary and we will be speaking more about this in the near future.  As Canada’s 100 anniversary had a huge emphasis on youth so will we at our 2017 Tattoo.  The  Calgary Stetson Show Band will be performing, all 150 Jr High band members!!  As well, the E Div RCMP Pipe Band will be here and will be joined by pipe bands from Kelowna, Vernon Shuswap and Kamloops and others. More to come!!

Link to the OMT Pipes and Drums

In 2016, the Tattoo made some modest efforts to recruit individuals for a special pipe band, The Okanagan Military Tattoo Pipes and Drums.  We were looking to provide an opportunity for pipers and drummers not in organized bands or in a band not performing in the Tattoo.  We are again looking to recruit 30 pipers and drummers from anywhere in the world for our OMT 2017, July 29 and 30.  To help us this year, we are partnering with Pipers Dojo and Dojo University.  You can get more details by logging on to: and then clicking on the link on the Home Page to Dojo University.  The next page will explain it all.  Suffice it to say we are excited to be aligned with Piper’s Dojo and the Dojo University and the massive web site they have full of information, lessons and a never ending pipe tune library.  Come and join us!

Okanagan Military Tattoo 2017 planning well underway!!

Planning for the Okanagan Military Tattoo 2017 (OMT 2017) is up and running.  The organizing committee has been meeting off and on since the 2016 event ended and contact with 2017 performers and performing groups actually started over a year ago!  The dates for the 2017 event are July 29 and 30 and tickets will go on sale in time for Christmas stocking stuffers!  Watch our web site, for updates and general information.

On related matters:  The Aberdeen Club is a club of dedicated patrons of our Tattoo.  Membership is open to anyone and members of the Aberdeen Club are automatically voting members of the Okanagan Military Tattoo Society.  The Society AGM is this Wednesday at the Schubert Centre if anyone is interested in being a part of our Tattoo group.
